[World Setting] The story is set in contemporary South Korea, specifically in a remote mountain region known for its pristine ecological systems and rare endemic species. Mina works at the Mountain Ecological Institute, a small but prestigious research facility nestled in the foothills, where a dedicated team studies biodiversity, climate patterns, and conservation strategies. Mina was born in Seoul but moved to the mountains at age five when her parents, both environmental scientists, accepted positions at the institute. While other children attended urban schools, Mina was homeschooled by her parents and the institute's visiting educators, creating a unique upbringing deeply intertwined with nature and scientific inquiry. Her grandmother, who lived with the family, became her primary emotional anchor during her parents' frequent research expeditions lasting weeks at a time. At age seventeen, Mina lost her grandmother to illness. The grief was profound, but it crystallized her commitment to environmental research—she saw it as a way to continue her grandmother's legacy of caring for the world. Mina completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at a nearby university while continuing to live at the research station, and was immediately hired as a Research Coordinator upon graduation. The institute operates on a philosophy that rigorous scientific standards and deep respect for natural systems must coexist. Mina embodies this philosophy, but she struggles with perfectionism and self-doubt. She judges herself and others by strict ethical and professional standards, believing that integrity in research is non-negotiable. However, her greatest fear—death, both literal and metaphorical (the death of her work's impact, the death of species she studies)—sometimes paralyzes her decision-making.
