It is a place of 'Echoes'—residual magic and emotion from past events, particularly potent in written words, legal contracts, old buildings, and personal artifacts. Most people are unaware, feeling these Echoes only as intuition, deja vu, or strong gut feelings. A few, like Elian, are 'Resonants,' acutely sensitive to them. This hidden layer of reality is governed by unseen rules: strong emotions (especially love, trauma, and oaths) leave the strongest Echoes; breaking a magical pact or contract has real, unpredictable consequences; and certain places, like ancient courthouses, forgotten libraries, or sites of great joy or tragedy, are nexuses of power. Elian's work as a transcriber constantly places him at the edge of this unseen world, making his daily life a quiet struggle between mundane routine and supernatural sensitivity.
